THE TALENTED MR. IAN

I fear that if I continue to blog about my dear husband, I will not  remain married for long but tonight I just cannot help myself.  Here is the gist of a conversation we had last night.

Me (coming into the bedroom, finding him with remote in hand).  "Whatcha watching?"

Ian: "The Talented Mr. Ripley."

Me: "Really???"

"Yes,  why have you seen it?'

"No, but you have."

"No I haven't."

"Ah yes you have, a long time ago, you didn't like it and you told me not to bother watching it, that I wouldn't like it either."

"I'm pretty sure I haven't seen it."

I will interject at this point and tell you that this is the same man whom in the space of a year rented the same movie four times telling me it must be a good one because it had both Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson in it.  It wasn't.  The fourth time he brought it home, I thought  he was joking.  He wasn't.   Back to our conversation.

"Trust me Ian, you've seen it and anyway I thought you'd be watching the hockey game. (Canada vs US Olympic game)

"It's not on"

"Yes it is.  It started at seven forty"

"Well we don't get it then"

"What do you mean?"

"I've been through the channels and I'm telling you we don't get it."

"We've been getting the other olympic events so I'm pretty sure we get it." I take the remote from his hands, scroll through the guide, click on a channel and voila! the hockey game appears on the screen.  He is suitably impressed with my channel finding skills.

Fast forward to tonight.

Ian: " I watched the rest of that movie last night in between watching the game. "(Such a man thing.)

"Did you remember having seen it?"

"No, but I didn't like it... you wouldn't either."

IF IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN TO ANYONE...

I'd had a mammogram before so I knew what to expect.  A technician would hand me a gown, I'd go into the little changing cubicle, take off my top and bra, put on the gown with the ties at the front, and then come out to the mammogram machine.  My breast would be placed on a cold metal ledge by the technician while I stood right up against the machine with my one arm raised high above my head, the other arm trying to clutch the gown closed across my other exposed breast.  The machine would then lower a clear acrylic plate down on top of my breast and squeeze tight, and by tight I mean like a death grip.  My breast would then do it's best Scottish, chocolate chip pancake impression. (cheap Scots only put one chip in per pancake) It's at this point that the technician goes round the corner, tells you "take a deep breath and don't move".  The machine takes a picture, another button is pushed, and the machine releases it's vice like grip on one of your twins.  Yep, I had done it once before, no biggie, so when my doctor suggested I go for another mammogram a couple of years later just as a check up, I never gave it a second thought.
I showed up at the hospital at the appointed time and was told to have a seat and wait for the technician to come and get me.  A few minutes later I looked up from the magazine I was reading and noticed coming down the hall in her blue scrubs, the woman I had run against for PTA president.  She had desperately wanted the position whereas I could have cared less... in fact, I had only run because the principal of the school had asked me to as a favour. ( I think he was afraid of her.)  She was rather austere and rarely smiled.  I won the election, she was not impressed, and she had come to every PTA meeting that year it seemed just to make trouble.  When I saw her walking down the hall (I had forgotten she worked at the hospital) I quickly glanced back down at my magazine, avoiding eye contact at all cost.   She stopped in front of me and you can imagine my horror when I realized she was THE technician.  The conversation went something like this.
Her (not smiling): "Are you ready to come in?" (No hello, how are you?)
Me: "Ummm... are you doing the mammogram?"
Her (still not smiling): "That's my job, so yes!"
Me: "Is there someone else that can do it?" ( I mean honestly, would you want your arch enemy handling your private parts?)
Her (Overtly unimpressed with my questions):  "The only other person available is a man.  Would you rather have him do it?"
Trapped!  If I said yes, then a rumour might start floating round the community that I had asked a man to handle my breasts (albeit innocently) or at the very least that I had preferred a man over a woman to do perform the procedure but saying no meant that she had full exposure to my breasts and I was definitely not comfortable with that.
Me (with great trepidation): "I guess I'll have you do it"
It was the first time that day she smiled at me.
I followed her into the room, changed, presented myself at the machine, and cringed as she grabbed my breast and placed it on the glass. How humiliating.  She fiddled with some buttons and the machine closed down on my breast... tight... extra tight.   "hmmm" I heard her mutter.  I could hear her playing around with the machine but trapped like I was, I could not see what was going on.  It seemed to be taking a long time.
"There seems to be a problem with the mammography machine" she informed me. "I'll need to get some help."
She had the male technician come in to have a look.  He fiddled around for a couple of minutes without success, left the room and came back with a maintenance guy.  He also had no luck and another maintenance guy was called in and yet another.   They all seemed oblivious to me, still stuck with my breast flattened in the machine, arm still raised high above my head.
It appeared that the machine would not easily be fixed, the problem now ( I could hear the discussion) was how to get me out of it.  The next thing I knew, I was surrounded by the men as they struggled with the acrylic plate, straining to lift it enough for me to slip out of its grip.  Free at last, I quickly changed and tried to sneak out of the room unnoticed.  "You'll need to rebook your appointment at the front desk" I heard her say in a rather loud voice.  I turned, the men all looked up from their work, and for the second time that day, I saw her smile.

SIX GIRLS AND A CITY PART 2

There's just something about traveling with a group of girls that can't be matched.  Sure six women sharing one tiny bathroom can be a logistical nightmare, especially when one of them in particular likes to take her time in the shower (I won't mention any names Olivia), but the fun an all girl group has together far outweighs waiting for a turn in the bathroom.  All except one of us were related somehow through marriage and it was fun to bond and get to know each other better.
I learned that gas escaping from Emily's butt can clear a room pretty fast (she tried to tell us that it was also her feet), that Natalie is forever bopping around to music she hears in her head (better than voices I guess), that Olivia has some creative uses for clementines (I'd post pictures but I promised...), that Brittany can suck back more than her fair share of a frozen hot chocolate (and anyone else's leftovers), and that Donna can pole dance (I have video to prove it).   I don't think that I've laughed so hard in a long time.
I will never forget doing the wave in Central Park, dancing in the glass elevator in the Apple Store, laughing at Donna's spills, watching Olivia snatch up the stray M&Ms, adventures on the subway, being a spectator in a road rage altercation, being led down the back streets of Chinatown to buy knock-off purses, and the drunk guy asking his friend "why there be white people in Harlem?"

PLAYING CUPID

So my husband turns to me today and asks if I wouldn't mind passing on an acquaintance's email to a certain young woman in our church congregation.  I was a little reluctant because I have never met this man and felt like I couldn't vouch for the guy's character even if my husband assured me that he could.
Me:  How old is this guy?
Ian: mmmm.... I'm not sure.
You have to have some sort of idea.
In his thirties maybe?
Oh that really narrows it down. Closer to twenty nine or to forty?
Maybe in the middle?
So, is he good looking?
Um... I don't know.
He looks totally panic stricken at this question. Is he afraid I will think he is gay if he answers yes? It is an offense to their masculinity to even suggest that they notice another man's appearance. Apparently, straight guys are not good judges of other guys looks.  Really?   I don't believe it, not one little bit.  They just won't admit it.

PONDERING PORCELAIN

Standing outside a public washroom in Sardinia, I overheard a couple of American women complaining about the toilets, one even refusing to use the facilities for reasons she referred to as disgusting.  I was a little leery about going in but I really, really needed to go.  I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the stall was actually quite clean but laughed when I saw the toilet itself, complete with a spot to place your feet.  The women in line had considered the idea of squatting to pee ridiculous and gross. Really?  Putting your bare bum on a toilet seat where hundreds of others have isn't?  I think I prefer the squatting thing but then again I have pretty good balance.

MEN ARE FROM MARS

It's been interesting watching people's reaction to the "big news" and it has made me realize just how different men are to women. It has been made even more evident discussing the reception plans with my husband and married son. The males are totally unfazed with the daunting task of putting a wedding together in just seven short weeks. They believe that seven weeks is more than ample time. Here is my idea of of a wedding planned by a (straight) guy. In other words, my husband.

Invitations= just call everybody on the phone, it's free and a whole lot easier. If you want to get fancy, email them.

Dinner= KFC, everybody loves that stuff.

Drinks= buy a few cases of soda, saves on glasses.

China= paper plates, no cleanup

Flatware= plastic cutlery, it comes in white, perfect wedding colour.

Decorations= what are those?

Wedding dress= Wear your mother's, she WAS your size when I married her. I'm sure it will fit.

Venue= We can clean out the garage. No one will notice the oil stains.

This is why my husband will not be involved in any of the reception plans. I will smile politely at his suggestions, ask for the check book, and roll my eyes heavenward as I walk away. Perhaps this was his plan all along.
